The cafeteria of Charles E. Patterson Middle School was filled with music, cheers, and celebration as students, staff, and community members gathered to honor the 90th birthday of the school’s namesake — former Killeen ISD Superintendent and principal Dr. Charles Patterson, a living legacy whose leadership has shaped generations across the community.
Few names carry as much meaning as Dr. Patterson’s. His 46 years of service to Killeen ISD as an educator and leader stand as a testament to his unwavering grace, integrity, and accountability.
From celebrating with Killeen ISD through state championships like Killeen High School’s football and track teams, to leading the district’s staff, students and families through a major deployment during the Gulf War, Dr. Patterson’s leadership has been defined by wisdom, resilience, and dedication.
Interim Superintendent Dr. King Davis described him as “a man in relentless pursuit of perfection,” whose example continues to inspire both students and educators.
Joining Dr. and Mrs. Patterson at the celebration were their daughters and granddaughter. Special guests included Board President Brett E. Williams, Secretary Brenda Adams, and Board Member Marvin Rainwater, along with former Board of Trustees president and principal Corbett Lawler, longtime KISD legacy Doc Wilson, and numerous community members, former principals, and students who have been impacted by Dr. Patterson’s work and mentorship.
“I don’t know if there was an easier campus to name than this one,” said President Williams, who grew up in Killeen ISD while Patterson was the superintendent. “Dr. Patterson has set a very high benchmark for all of us.”
The celebration began with a musical performance by the Patterson Middle School Band, followed by spirited routines from the Lady Cavaliers cheer and dance teams.
Former and current principals — including Dr. Jill Balzer, Dr. Kara Trevino, Latisha Williams, Christina Harris, and current principal Trish Brown — shared memories of their time at Patterson Middle School and their personal reflections on Dr. Patterson’s lasting influence.
Dr. Balzer recalled meeting with Dr. Patterson before the school’s opening to discuss the campus mascot and colors. The Cavaliers, named in honor of the First Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, would stand for the values: Academics, Leadership, Integrity, Effort, Resiliency, and Service to Others.
That commitment to excellence and character still echoes through the school’s hallways today.
No birthday celebration would be complete without music and gifts. After the Girls’ Varsity Choir sang “Happy Birthday,” Principal Trish Brown presented Dr. Patterson with a custom Cavaliers football jersey featuring the number 90.
Following a standing ovation, Dr. Patterson expressed his gratitude to the students and staff. “This school is a blessing to me. It brings me joy to be able to come back and meet the students.”
Dr. Charles Patterson’s legacy continues, not only through the hallways of the school that bears his name, but in every student and educator that learn, lead, and serve with the same integrity and accountability he has modeled throughout the years.
Happy birthday, Dr. Patterson, from the Killeen ISD community.
